BigAdda, Ibibo, Fropper among Dataquest Top 25 Hot Indian Web 2.0 Startups

13 May, 2009
Cyber Media’s Dataquest magazine has published a list of Top 25 Hot Indian Web 2.0 Startups which include BigAdda, Ibibo, Fropper, DesiMartini, BharatStudent, MingleBox, Indyarocks, ApnaCircle, Burrp TV, Kwippy, LifeBlob, LordsOfOdds, CommonFloor, IndiaMarks, Indipepal, Kreeo, Metaaso, AuthorStream, Uhooroo, Zahdoo, TellAFriend.SocialTwist.com, Kwench.in, Parentree.in, MobShare.in and Tagz.in.

“India has the potential to significantly drive the direction in which Web 2.0 is moving. Micro-blogging and video streaming are the future of Web 2.0 along with niche networking, be it on a friendship portal or around communities,” Shyamanuja Das, editor, Dataquest, has said, adding. “A stronger revenue model and a shift from ad-based framework to an e-commerce based set-up are desirable.”

According to Dataquest, the list was prepared by its editors with the help of IndianWeb2.com from 54 shortlisted companies which began operations on or after January 1, 2007 and are headquartered in India. While shortlisting the companies the focus was on those companies that had collaboration or Web 2.0 attributes as core to their business model. The other parameters which were used to select the winners were reach, impact and innovativeness of offering.

We are glad that we made it to the list.

@Darshan: We are sorry for the inconvenience and confusion. Maintenance Due tracking is actually live and ready to use. Please contact the person you have been in touch with for a demo.

Recently sat through a demo from the team of commonfloor.com. Our association asked to see some facilities listed on their website like Maintenance Due tracking etc., but they said they don't actually have it and could not show!

Why is Dataquest showcasing such entities that have no credibility? Are rest of the Web2.0 startups in the list also like this?

I too do not agree with all the names, but at least they have taken a step to compile a list. We can criticize any list, but as an ex-media person, I can understand they might have included a few just to make it a nice number: 25.

I still feel Dataquest has made a beginning. And it is good, if not perfect

There is no doubt that this most ridiculous list of top indian startups. Bigadda, Ibibo, BharatStudent, Fropper, Minglebox, DesiMartini are not startups and most of them are not even web2.0 compatible. I never heard about AuthorStream, Zahdoo, Metaaso.
I know the inside story of nearly half a dozen startups in the list. What surprises me is LordsOfOdds. The site is not drawing great number of users, only one notable deal (that with ESPN), not enough fund (and no body willing to invest), sites now have several security vulnerability and founders have left the company sometime back. Anyway congratulation Krishnamurti and Upadhyay.

Ridiculous nonsense. If they had bothered to check the company websites they would have realised how un-hot these companies really are. Bharatstudent, I mean REALLY!

DataQuest is pimping edit space for money; pathetic brand to be so idiotic and call itself a media company. Shame on you. Maybe, the owners shd open an extension to bharatstudent seeing their proclivity to pimp for money.

The challenge for these websites is to get a stronger revenue model in place. Most of these websites have done a great job by having a good feature rich website and content in place. I consider bigadda & burrp as the best.

I am not happy with the list. Only few ones are good. Rest does not deserve the name in the list.
The Best one: (Alphatical)
Burrp.com, Commonfloor.com, IndyaRocks.com, Kwippy.com, LordofOdds.com, Parentree.in, Tell-a-friend

Not Bad: Tagz.in, Mobshare.in, Indipepal.com, Lifeblob.com

Startups, huh, who says these are startups:
Bigadda, Ibibo, BharatStudent, Fropper, Minglebox

Have not heard of. As mentioned by BALA:
AuthorStream, Indiamarks, Kreeo.com, Kwench.com, Uhooro, Zahdoo, Metaaso

Useless Companies. Not even worth talking about:
DesiMartini, Apna Circle

My 2 Cents.

Pathetic work by Dataquest - Fropper, Minglebox etc have been around for ages, struggling & almost dead plus they are not web 2.0 - Pradeep Gupta has hired some non-techies old age people to run dataquest? PG wake up & kick their butts

horrible list. it's clear that:
1. dataquest does not understand the meaning of web2.0
2. dataquest does not understand what a startup means...sites more than 5 years old are also startups?
3. wud like to know more abt the shortlisting process. is it transparent??

grow up, guys. stop fooling people with such compilations!
